Toll Systems

New technologies at the service of customers

Quality of service and the safety and comfort of customers are the priority objectives that have been taken into account in the solutions that have been applied to toll systems in recent years.

We have a technological system in the toll booths that is designed and developed "to measure" by abertis autopistas’ Technology Management and adapted to customers’ new demands. Thanks to this system, more than 1,500 km, 119 toll booths, 1,320 toll roads and more than 750,000 average daily toll transactions are managed.

The toll booths have qualified staff and technological resources to assure optimum conditions of service, among others: systems that count the vehicles on the road, incident warning alarms, video cameras and PA systems that allow the level of traffic on the roads to be controlled and to increase the service if necessary, integrated for greater control with the systems in the Operations Centres, responsible for the highway administration of the motorways.

In Spain, there is a toll system controlled by barriers that accepts the following methods of payment:

  • Cash. Coins and notes.
  • Credit cards. abertis autopistas’ toll system supports the latest advances in electronic payment security, such as online validation and EMV transactions (chip card).
  • Electronic Toll Collection (ETC). In addition to transactions using the Spanish ETC system, Via-T, French ETC systems are also accepted: Liber-t (light vehicles) and TIS-PL (heavy vehicles), as well as the future European EETS system.

Statistics show that the electronic toll collection system facilitates going through the toll and is the most convenient form for the customer, reducing the economic transaction time by avoiding having to completely stop, improving mobility on the motorways.

Some of the latest technological novelties introduced in toll systems are the following:

  • All kind of payment roads:

    All kind of payment roads:

    All kind of payment roads

A new prototype of road toll that accepts any method of payment: cash, card and Via-T. These kinds of roads have been introduced on the AP2 and AP7 motorways and have been well received by customers. A deployment of audio and video systems has been made that allows customers’ incidents to be dealt with and solved remotely.

  • "Free-Flow" porches:

    "Free-Flow" porches:

    "Free-Flow" porches

Free-Flow technology allows tolls to be collected through reading ETC devices, classifying the kind of vehicle (light and heavy) and reading the number plate of all the vehicles that go under the porches. They have already been deployed on the AP7 motorway and their introduction on other motorways is being studied.

  • Number Plate Recognition System (NPRS):

    Number Plate Recognition System (NPRS):

    Number Plate Recognition System (NPRS)

On all the toll roads that lead on to and off the AP7 and AP2 motorways, between the “Y" formed by Martorell-Sagunto-Alfajarín, a number plate recognition system has been introduced. It allows the information available about the trips made by our customers to be reinforced and is of great help in solving incidents.

We are also advancing in incorporating new functions to the systems such as the direct application of discounts for ecological vehicles or high-occupancy vehicles which is translated into an improvement in managing mobility and sustainability.
