Every first Sunday of August, residents of Catoria, recreate the Viking invasions suffered a thousand years ago. A holiday, which commemorates the role played by Catoria in defense of Galicia against the attacks of Saracens and Norman pirates, in search of the Treasure of the Compostelana Church.

The Mystery of Elche

The Mystery of Elche

Every August, the city of Alicante Elche welcomes, inside the Basilica of Santa Maria, a spectacular recreation of the Dormition, Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin Mary. Divided into two acts, on 14 and 15 August, the work is known as El Misteri d'Elx (the mystery of Elche) dates back to the fifteenth century. Is on the list of National Monuments since 1931 and in 2001 became part of the first Proclamation of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

 

Take advantage to:
  • Discover the largest palm grove in Europe, with over 200,000 copies in the Routes The Elche Palm or palm trees, which will also serve for the city of Elche.
  • Tour the Natural Park of Las Salinas de Santa Pola, a wetland area and Important Bird Special in which to contemplate flamingos and storks in their natural habitat.

WHERE: San Lúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz (Andalucía)

 Declared of International Tourist Interest, horse races are held every year on the beach of Sanlucar de Barrameda (Cádiz) in the month of August are actually an amazing show. Part of the Spanish equestrian circuit, bring together the best horses and riders. Event comes for a long tradition as it has been celebrating since 1845. Not are the older races, but they are the longest-disputing. Horses galloping through the sand on the beach of this town of Cadiz coast, a delight for the senses.

Feast of canoes. International Descent of Sella

WHERE: Arriondas-Ribadesella (Asturias)

WHEN: 8 August 2015

Every year on the first Saturday of August, paddlers from around the world flock to Asturias to participate in the Sella's descent. More than a thousand boats struggling to be the first to walk the path of 20 kilometers on the River Sella, from the town of Arriondas to the finish in Ribadesella. On shore, thousands of spectators enjoy themselves, screaming and encouraging the athletes, in the called Festival of Canoes.

La Tomatina is a street festival where participants throw tomatoes at each other. This fest is held the last Wednesday of August, nestled within the week of festivities of Bunol is celebrated. This unusual fiesta brings together crowds of people every year, ready to have a great time of laugher and fun, hurling tomatoes at each other. Participants at this joyful pitched battle have a wonderful time throwing tomatoes at anything that moves.
