Les Guilleries & L’Estartit

For lovers of walking and unique natural settings, for people who want to go on enjoying the seaside off-season and for those who love old stories, Catalonia offers an inexhaustible range of options under a single motto: having a great time for very little money. Who says fun has to be expensive? Just to prove it, here are some of our ideas aimed at all pockets.

We recommend you try a break in the forests of Les Guilleries and on the seaside at L’Estartit and the Medes islands

Adventure in the forests of Les Guilleries (Barcelona and Girona provinces)

In the north of the Montseny and forming part of the Catalan pre-coastal mountain chain, the forests of Les Guilleries are the perfect setting in which to enjoy a thousand and one adventures in contact with nature.

To start with, a real experience for just a few euros: here in Les Guilleries you can visit some of the settings which saw the exploits of the legendary bandit Serrallonga, the Catalan Robin Hood, atop a Segway (from 45 euros), the best way to enjoy the countryside without tiring yourself out. The route, parts of which run along the GR-178 long-distance footpath, takes in some of the places where the famous outlaw forged his legend.

To eat

For people who love to get their adrenalin going in a natural setting on a shoestring, nothing can beat the Centre Extrem, a unique option which, like the Selva de la Aventura, is the ideal place for big and small alike to have a great time. Bungee jumping, ponting and tree running are the three specialities you can try, high up in giant trees, 80 feet above the ground.

A more relaxing alternative is to discover the charm of the small villages dotted around the area. Arbúcies, Espinelves, Sant Feliu de Buixalleu are some of them, not forgetting Sant Hilari Sacalm, with the fascinating Museum of Les Guilleries, a great way of understanding and finding out about the area’s natural values.

The sea in winter at L’Estartit-Medes (Girona province)

At L’Estartit, which lies between the Alt Empordà and Baix Empordà areas, surrounded by protected areas of natural interest and with an exceptional coastline, the fun doesn’t close down for holidays once summer is over.

In fact, the sailing and watersports centre of L’Estartit–Illes Medes (Tel. 972 75 06 99), situated right in the Montgrí, Medes islands and Baix Ter nature park, offers a varied combination of sea and sports aimed at all tastes and pockets. Here there are activities suitable for all levels and ages, with special programmes for the youngest members of the family and exciting options for the more daring. The perfect plan: fun and contact with nature for very little money. Here at L’Estartit–Illes Medes you can enjoy - and do courses in - activities like sailing, windsurfing and water skiing, sea kayaking or descending the river Ter. Not to forget the star activity here: diving under the sea around the Medes islands. While the sea water is obviously not as warm as in summer, the treasures of the marine nature park around the Medes islands are still within the reach of any diver who wants to discover them.

In the afternoon you can opt to hire a bicycle to visit the nearby countryside. Another fun option is to join a guided route by Segway, an innovative and very green means of transport.
